Illamasqua provide the make-up for Threeasfour's New York Fashion Week show

We caught up with Illamasqua’s Head US Artist Andrea Helgadottir on her inspirations for the Threeasfour Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear Fashion Show...

"The Threeasfour Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear Fashion Show was filled with bold, rich patterns inspired by both Islamic and Israeli cultures. On the runway we saw a melting pot of strong statement symbols mixed with light fabrics to create a beautiful yet powerful collection."

Andrea headed up our fantastic team to create a fresh look with Illamasqua with the emphasis on the eyes.
Helgadottir exclusively revealed her inspiration to us -“I was inspired by the evil eye symbol”

To Get the Look...

Using our Foundation Brush and just a pea sized amount of the Rich Liquid Foundation, Andrea created a base with a velvet finish. To create glowing, luminous skin she applied Illuminator in Halcyon to the cheek bones. The ivory pearl color created a fresh dewy face perfect for bright eyes.

The eyes were the main focus of the look and Andrea channeled the evil eye by coating the inner corner of the eye to the middle of the lid with Liquid Metal in Superior. The metallic cobalt blue color made the eyes pop. The eyes were finished with a dusting of Pure Pigment in Beguile over the entire lid to add a light iridescent shimmer.

To accentuate the lashes Andrea used our new Masquara to lengthen and define each lash.

With the focus on the eyes, she complimented the look with a nude lip of Intense Lipgloss in Façade.

Alex gets BLEACHED!

What a weekend it has been! Plenty of fashion on the catwalks and on the streets of London since the Fashion set turned their attention to our fashion week... stay tuned for a write up this week from behind-the-scenes at the Ashley Isham show and the Ada Zanditon presentation, where Illamasqua were the make-up brand of choice! We have some great pictures to show you.

We've also had our team scouring the decadent grounds of Somerset House to get some snaps of the amazing make-up that we've seen on show - we'll have an up and coming trend report at the end of the week, too!

In fact, I was feeling so inspired by the new season [about time - finally an excuse for the cold weather] that I decided to get my hair seen to by the cool kidz at BLEACH London - the salon that promises cool, creative, colourful hair to those who are looking to celebrate their individuality and explore their artistic side...

The lovely Bradley [who incidentally has styled the locks of our Creative Director Alex Box!] took good care of me, listening to the [actually pretty horrendous] history of my hair; how it has gone from blonde, to brown, back to blonde, to brown with pink stripes [don't ask...] to brown, to blue, back to blonde and eventually landing at fire engine red this time last year!

So it was definitely time for a change, and I've been inspired by the dip dye trend [or HairEnders as BLEACH call it] which I used to have on my blonde hair back in 2010 - I wanted to see what could be done with red hair.

So this is my rather awful before picture [how amazing is their hair-spiration wall?? Get ye to Topshop London to check it out!]

With the bleach on ...

Being styled by the lovely Bradley ...

And the final look. Yes, it's an awful photo so I've also included one with Marketing Assistant Hayley Smith ...

I'm thrilled with my new look... what do you think? Have you tried BLEACH yet?! Oh and check out this blog ... the guys at BLEACH told me about it and it's now my latest obsession... mylittlepony.tumblr.com

Princess Julia on her role in the Theatre of the Nameless

Our Theatre of the Nameless campaign features the beautiful and iconic Princess Julia! We caught up with her for her insight and perspective on what it was like on the day of the shoot and how she got into character...

What was it like to be the feature in Illamasqua's AW11 campaign?

I'm thrilled with the final result, as a lover of make-up this was a dream come true! It really was. I've been following Alex Box since she started working with Gareth Pugh and was fascinated by the way she approached make-up and mark-making. The world's she creates within the premises of style have a multi layered approach where she explores both detail and the bigger picture.

In essence the pictures and presentation of Illamasqua's 'Theatre of the Nameless' convey a mystery, hints of decadence and throughly forward thinking approach to what make-up can create.

What was it like on the day of the shoot?

Walking into the underground location of an 18th century Bathhouse turned club in Bishopsgate I immediately felt transported into a secret world, it was fairly early in the morning as I discussed clothes and accesories with the wardrobe department. Then hair... a tightly manicured bob frizzed out. The 'look' was Anita Berber, the 20's and 30's Weimar peroid in Germany, Otto Dix and the like. I've read the amazing story of Berber and her antics and in a sense being involved in clubs, art and style now relates directly to her world of that time.

Discussing concepts with Alex Box was enlightening, as she made me up we spoke about the compounds of color, pigmentation and ways to create different illusions. Layering and painting, much like working on a canvas, she peered close up and then stood away to take in the full effect of her work.

How did you get into character?

It wasn't hard as I was already aufait with the total look, the process, and i'm fascinated with process, built a visualization throughout the afternoon, so on set and infront of a camera I felt transported into a dark and sultry world. Trying out various positions with photographer Jem Mitchell directing me as we went I think he captured an atmospheric and enticing series of shots that both complimented the ethos of Illamasqua and the work they do.

Thank you to Princess Julia for the interview!

Girl band Pris get transformed...

We have a new love here at Illamasqua HQ and it comes in the form of three ladies called Pris. Attitude and Lipstick. What’s not to love?

A bit about Pris…..

Cat, Agatha and Mary joined forces last year to mix their own brands of attitude, arrogance and swagger into something worth looking at and listening to. Voicing all those things you've ever thought and never dared to say since you grew up, got a real job, bought a house in suburbia and told yourself it was what you'd always wanted in the first place, Pris' sparky pop punk will reignite your rage, bring back your greed for glamour and have you craving cultural revolution.

Pris were invited to the Illamasqua flagship store last weekend to create some new stage looks in preparation for their upcoming shows…

What is your usual make-up look?

Mary:
I like lots of black eyeliner, big lashes, but keeping the face clear with a coral or pale red lipstick.

Agatha:
My usual make-up look is also my signature look and resembles two weeks of partying and never ending rock n roll lifestyle. It's unique in its own rights.

Cat:
A grungy, eyeliner, sex kitten lippy mess!  And lashes of mascara of course. Bardot meets a depressed panda look.

Does it differ from day to stage? – Do you create your own stage looks?

Mary wearing Lipstick in Box, Medium Pencil in Spell and Pure Pigment in Berber

Mary:
On stage we all exaggerate, so paler skin but more colour on cheeks and lips, darker eyes, glitter over black smudged eyes.  Red lipstick and nails.  It’s a mask that you can go mad under just for those stage moments.

How did you hear about Illamasqua?

Cat:
I've got a huge girl crush on Lol (Vicky McClure) from This Is England so when I heard she is an Illamasqua brand ambassador I had to check out the brand. I love that there is something extremely punk, DIY and 1970s about Illamasqua, so with that and Vicky combined it was love at first sight.

Mary:
I saw the recent Illamasqua brand film “Born Again” on a friends Facebook page. I also love Vicky McClure. In the video she drives along a dusty road, looking so sharp and so beautiful but like you wouldn’t mess with that girl, so I had to know more about the brand she was representing. Realising it was a British brand made me excited. I don’t know another make-up line out there that gives such good quality make up and adds dollops of inspiration to the mix.

What are your favourite pieces from Illamasqua?

Mary:
The Cream Pigments and Skin Base foundation. The Cream Pigments are amazing, they’re basically pure dye that can be used on eyes, lips, cheeks or even hair!  The foundation is silky but covering, which is what I need when I want my clear canvas look.  I also love the Illuminators and Nail Varnishes, basically I love it all!

Cat wearing Lipstick in Disciple, Medium Pencil in Sophie and Pure Pigment in Alluvium

Cat:
I adore the Pure Pigments which I will be using here, there and everywhere. I also love that Illamasqua do the palest of pale shades in foundation and powder - being a translucent dolly myself I can totally relate to these.

Illamasqua is about self-expressing and drawing out your alter ego, who would each of your alter egos be?

Agatha:
My alter ego would be a crossover of Nina Hagen and David Bowie because they were both pioneers in breaking the rules and moving performances to another level.

Mary:
Dusty Springfield, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Vivien Leigh.  They had darkness behind their eyes like they’ve seen the world, wise and beautiful.

Who is your “make-up hero”?

Agatha:
My make-up hero would have to be Nina Hagen, purely for her non-conformist approach to creating her looks.

The real people behind our Autumn Winter campaign...

Our decadent Autumn Winter campaign features real people, not just models, as we strive to push the boundaries!

We used two influential characters from the underground subcultures of London today, who have now become dear friends of the Illamasqua brand.

Princess Julia and Ryan Styles are both expressive individuals who use their identity to bring out their bold alter-egos.

Princess Julia is a British DJ, music writer, part of the Blitz Kids scene in the early 80's, and is now a contributor to ID magazine.

Ryan Styles is an performer, musician, and all round artist. His iconic look, presence, and character can be strongly felt in the Theatre of the Nameless imagery.

We caught up with Ryan to get his thoughts and his experience shooting the campaign.

What was it like to be the feature in Illamasqua's AW11 campaign?

Ryan: 'A fab experience, I really like the photo's. I got to try lots of different make-up and learn from one of the best in the industry'

What was it like on the day of the shoot?

Ryan: 'Too cool, lots of dressing up and trying on vintage jewellery, hair and make-up which kept changing, I was transforming all day long'

How did you get into character?

Ryan: 'The great styling helped me along to become a very confident sexually ambiguous decadent flapper' or at least I thought so... hehe'

A little Theatre of the Nameless experiment...

We have been having a bit of an experiment in the office today, our Junior Brand Manager Alex Cummins shows some of our amazing discoveries!

Here Alex is wearing Pure Pigment in Zeitgeist on the outer corners and lower lash line.

We absolutely love Alex's lips she created by first applying Lipstick in Box and then layering Sheer Lipgloss in Violate over the top!

 With the flash on.
With no flash.

Enjoy experimenting with Theatre of the Nameless this weekend...
